Roof Mounting
raised rails with factory rails
The second-generation Mazda CX-5 (KF platform, 2017+) includes raised roof rails as standard equipment on Touring and above trims. The S trim (base) gets body-colored blanking plates where rails would be β a purely cosmetic panel with no structural mounting capability beneath it. For railed trims: Thule Evo Raised Rail (710401) or Yakima TimberLine towers mount directly with no fit kit. Rail-to-rail width measures approximately 40 inches, with a maximum front-to-rear crossbar spread of 32 inches. These dimensions are notably compact compared to mid-size SUVs β the CX-5 is closer to a compact crossover in roof real estate despite its SUV classification. Critical dimension: the shark fin antenna sits centered between the rails, 8 inches forward of the rear rail terminus. Most crossbar configurations clear it entirely, but cargo boxes longer than 72 inches may require forward positioning to avoid rear overhang over the antenna housing. [ADD PERSONAL EXPERIENCE] For the base S trim without rails: Thule Evo Clamp (710501) with Fit Kit 145186 clamps to the doorframe. Installation adds 45 minutes compared to rail-mount systems. The clamp feet leave no permanent marks but do compress the door seal rubber temporarily.
