Roof Mounting
raised rails with factory rails
The 6th-generation Subaru Outback (2020+) comes standard with a feature unique among vehicles in this class: integrated swing-out crossbars built into the raised roof rails. Every trim β Base through Wilderness β includes this system from the factory. No additional purchase is required for basic crossbar functionality. The factory crossbars swing out from recessed channels in the raised rails and lock into position. They are rated at 150 lbs dynamic load (700 lbs static when parked). The crossbar spread in the deployed position is approximately 32 inches, with an alternate rear anchor point that extends spread to approximately 40 inches. For aftermarket crossbars: Thule Evo Raised Rail (710401) or Yakima TimberLine towers clamp onto the Outback's raised rails regardless of whether the factory crossbars are deployed or stowed. You can run aftermarket bars alongside the factory system, though most owners choose one or the other. The Wilderness trim adds slightly more aggressive rail styling and roof rail-mounted tie-down hooks (four D-rings) β these are unique to Wilderness and provide additional cargo securing points that do not exist on other trims.
