Roof Mounting
bare roof
The Tesla Model Y has a bare glass roof with no factory rails, no fixed points, and no traditional attachment infrastructure. The entire roof is a single piece of tempered glass. This is the most challenging mounting scenario in our vehicle database. The solution: Thule Evo Clamp (710501) with Model Y-specific Fit Kit. The clamp feet grip the doorframe edges β the only structurally sound attachment points available. No drilling, no adhesive, no modification to the glass roof. Yakima offers an equivalent system with BaseLine towers. Critical constraint: the Model Y's glass roof means ALL load is transferred through the doorframe clamp points β four narrow contact patches. This limits dynamic load capacity to approximately 150 lbs (including rack weight). The glass roof panel is NOT load-bearing and must never be used as a support surface. Alternative: several aftermarket companies offer track-mount systems that bolt to the vehicle's structural mounting points (hidden under interior trim). These provide higher load capacity but require partial interior disassembly for installation.
