Roof Mounting
raised rails with factory rails
The Toyota 4Runner is an overlander's platform β and its roof rack ecosystem reflects that. Both the 5th generation (2010-2024) and 6th generation (2025+) feature raised roof rails with a critical engineering advantage: the 4Runner's body-on-frame construction provides mounting points that bolt directly to the frame through the roof pillars, not just to sheet metal. For crossbar-based systems: Thule Evo Raised Rail (710401) with WingBar Evo, or Yakima TimberLine with JetStream bars. No fit kit required β the raised rail clamp feet grip the factory rails directly. Installation is 15-20 minutes. For full-length platform racks: the 4Runner has the strongest aftermarket support of any mid-size SUV. Prinsu, Front Runner Slimline II, Sherpa Crestone, Victory 4x4, and RCI Metalworks all offer model-specific full-length platforms that replace the factory rails entirely. These bolt to the factory mounting points (8 bolts per side on 5th gen) with typical load ratings of 300-600 lbs static. The 5th-gen TRD Pro trim comes with a unique roof basket from the factory β a stamped steel unit that mounts to proprietary track rails. Aftermarket crossbars are NOT compatible with the TRD Pro basket system. You must choose one or the other.
